Need to update the 1998 paper on CSCW in Digital Libraries in preparation for i-Conference.

Invitation to IRB Staff to discuss application of IRB for GSLIS Research

Concrete plausible questions for clarification.

  1. Talk to IRB about how they would like to work with GSLIS.
  2. Talk to IRB about whether we can develop a larger scale permission for classes.
  3. A system similar to Waikato, where complex things require a form, other types of testing requires IRB being aware of the work and receiving informal clearance to proceed. May require up front training and work.

Document requirements that are not explicitly required on the form. e.g.location of principal investigators.

How is IRB handled in other schools. May be an issue in faculty hiring. e.g. faculty may be attracted to institutions with cooperative IRB proceedures.

“wizard of oz” studies where software hasn’t been written yet.

Cameron has added a page to the Confluence wiki that will have example IRB forms attached.

Mike met with ACM president and faculty advisor and there was enthusiasm for a Scrapheap challenge. Need to find examples for information science. How would the contest be run. What kinds of challenges would interest both CS and LIS students.

Cosnider creating a panel of CSCW experts outside of UIUC to create the challenge.

Edison and success

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Edison is quoted in Millard (1990) as having said: “The real measure of success is the number of experiments that can be crowded into 24 hours.”

I thought this was particularly appropriate given our discussion yesterday about IRB and getting rapid turn around on protocols. How would Edison fare if he had to deal with IRB? How can we get students (esp my own) to embrace this idea of rapid experimentation, rapid iteration?

Name of our Research Group

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Currently we have decided to name our research group the Eclectic Design Research Group. The naming of this group, however, has been a never-ending saga, so do not be surprised if the name changes again. Originally, we called ourselves the CSCW Research Group (the Computer Supported Cooperative Work Research Group), for lack of a better name. But our topics of interest and topics of discussion have ranged far beyond what would traditionally be considered CSCW research. For example, we have discussed topics in knowledge management (KM), human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-mediated communication (CMC), social informatics (SI), and sociotechnical systems. One common theme of the group is our interest in design. Another common theme of the group is our interest in rapid, iterative methods. A third theme is our focus on what people actually do. Thus rapid prototyping and evaluation, scenario based design, participatory design, etc., are all topics which we recurringly address.

The reason for choosing the name, “Eclectic Design Research Group” is based on the first definition of the word in Merriam Webster’s Online dictionary:

1: selecting what appears to be best in various doctrines, methods, or styles”

http://m-w.com/dictionary/Eclectic

Why? Because that is what we do. We do not believe in picking a single doctrine, field, method, approach, style, etc. Rather, we are constantly exploring new ideas, new methods, and new approaches to design, and always welcome new types of design projects. The purpose is to try to understand the nature of design, and to develop principles of design that are robust across different applications.

In any case, if you’ve got an idea for a better name for our group, feel free to email me: ifloyd2@gmail.com
